Odete’s project will be laying the groundwork for an organic cashew industry to be developed in East Timor. The seminar will discuss the importance of agriculture in East Timor, the advantages of cashew as a crop, and particularly the advantages of an organic cashew industry.

Odete will describe the history and current status of cashew trees in East Timor, as well as what research needs to be done before an industry can be established. Her project will identify high quality cashew clones in East Timor, develop protocols for the vegetative propagation of these clones, and determine the effects of farming strategies on cashew yields, including the use of an integrated pest management system using weaver ants.

Finally, she plans to use all of this information to provide recommendations and specific guidelines for the development of an organic cashew industry in East Timor.
