This workshop will explore the use of SMS in remote rural, developing contexts for improving professional and community engagement for improved health service delivery, research and project management.

We will outline its use in:

  • Data collection, surveys, polls
  • Health system functioning eg. Stockouts
  • Promoting health messages
  • Reminding patients about treatments, appointments,
  • Communicating with project team members and project management issues
  • Community engagement

An interactive demonstration of the functionality of Frontline SMS will also be conducted. So during this seminar bring your mobile phones and leave them on!

The use of personal mobile phones has increased rapidly, even in remote parts of the world, revolutionising the way people communicate. In Eastern Indonesia mobile phones are already used for health data reporting in an ad hoc way at some clinics and district offices. Our work is improving the effectiveness of health data reporting by adapting and implementing a computer-based system for requesting, receiving and managing data reported by SMS.

Frontline SMS has been used for a wide range of health applications in the region, including malaria and rabies management, medication stocking and immunisations. The software is used in more than 135 countries around the world for diverse uses, including disaster response, crime reporting, education and election monitoring.

All welcome
