Ian graduated with a BSc(Hons) majoring in Marine Biology and Tropical Marine Science at the University of Queensland (2004). He was awarded a PhD in Remote Sensing at the University of Queensland (2011), for research investigating the ability to discriminate, identify, and map coral reef benthos and substrates using remote sensing techniques.
Since completing his studies, Ian has worked as Project Scientist for Coral Cay Conservation, based in the Philippines, before joining RIEL in early 2012 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Ian is currently working on an AusAID funded project to map the coastal and marine habitats of Timor Leste and build the capacity of Timorese counterparts to undertake such projects independently in future.
Ian is interested in linking the biology and ecology of tropical marine ecosystems with the spatial and temporal scale advantages that remote sensing and GIS techniques can offer.
