The year 2020 will mark the 250 year anniversary of Captain Cook’s landing in New South Wales. That quarter of a millennium will have seen a profound transformation of an ancient continent and its distinctive people, landscapes, plants and animals. The 2000s have seen the emergence of a more activist national approach. Climate change started to dominate debate, underlined by pervasive drought and water scarcity. Concerns about food and energy security started to emerge. It is crucial that this next decade kicks off a new era in the evolution of modern Australians learning how to live more sustainably in and with our country.Right now — a time of flux, of rapid change and of re-thinking accepted norms — is exactly the time to be implementing a new approach to managing our natural capital. There is nothing far-fetched about the vision sketched here. Every element of it is eminently achievable given sufficient leadership, inspiration and commitment.
