Healthy Estuaries in Darwin Harbour and Biological Indicators

Healthy Estuaries in Darwin Harbour and Biological Indicators

We will investigate the microbiology of water and sediment in creeks and mangroves that receive treated sewage effluent. We will measure the extent of impact at increasing distances from the point source and identify sewage indicators for long-term monitoring. We will determine whether the measured biogeochemical changes have had a lasting biological effect -- for example, in mangrove communities -- by measuring the activity of nitrification and denitrification genes.Functional indicators will form the basis of low-cost direct measures of ecosystem function across the harbour.
