The aim of this project is firstly to quantify blue carbon stocks and flows in Darwin Harbour mangrove communities and secondly to facilitate CDU and NTG research involvement in an international Blue Carbon Habitat Rehabilitation Programme. The project will build on previous ecological research on Darwin Harbour mangroves through CDU, by measuring carbon stocks and flows and establishing Darwin Harbour as a Reference Site as part of a large regional program supported by international donors.  Restoring blue carbon habitats has significant benefits in terms of carbon sequestration, fish stocks and human livelihoods in coastal communities.  The larger program is ambitious and innovative in its multidisciplinary nature, and in the integration of biological and socio-economic considerations as well as the complexities of establishing a robust MRV (measurement, reporting and verification) regime for blue carbon. This project will generate valuable local data and assist CDU and NTG researchers to engage in the wider international project, potentially attracting international postgraduate students to CDU.
